Why Did Knitted Silk Suddenly Get So Popular?

Why Did Knitted Silk Suddenly Get So Popular?

I’ve always liked knitted silk, but I thought it was just me. It’s not as glamorous as silk satin, nor is it as unique as silk dupioni. It’s just a little, well, plain.

However, the thing about knitted silk is that it's like a white T-shirt; once it makes its way into your closet, or in this case, lingerie drawer, you'll always subconsciously reach for it.

Then you have more, and more, until one day you open your drawer - whoa - you have at least a dozen pairs of knitted silk panties - which are all you need for summer because you can no longer go back to cotton (too thick) or synthetic (not breathable).

The same thing happened with bras. I made our first knitted silk bra for myself. At the time it had buttons at the front and the silk was single-layer throughout. Then we came up with the pull-over version and added a layer to the front so you can put in bra pads if needed. Now it’s the bestselling bra in our Etsy shop.

What is knitted silk? Well, instead of being woven, silk fibres are looped or interlaced to create a smooth, breathable and matte finish. It still has a natural shine, but it’s very subtle. The main difference is that it’s stretchy and flexible, which makes it great for everyday lingerie.

But, I’ll explain using my language: Do you have a stretchy T-shirt? Yeah, it’s like that, but smoother, more breathable, and overall it just feels better. Plus, it doesn’t smell when you sweat because silk is odour-resistant.

One last thing to share before you check out our custom silk bras, panties and trunks - knitted silk is not always sheer. Though our ready-to-ship knitted silk panties are all light and sheer, we have a few densities available for customization. While the 14 momme one is lightweight, the ones that are 20 momme or 30 momme feel dense and buttery. Choose the one you prefer!
